To use this adventure, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player’s Handbook, the DUNGEON MASTER’s Guide, and the Monster Manual.

Product History

"The Speaker in Dreams" by James Wyatt was the third adventure module published by Wizards of the Coast for 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons. It follows "The Forge of Fury" in a loosely linked eight-adventure series. This adventure differs significantly from the previous two dungeon crawls in the series, as "Speaker in Dreams" is an event-based adventure taking place in a riverside town, with nary a central dungeon in sight. Sinister agendas and cinematic battles, with a balanced mix of investigation, combat and roleplaying interaction, make for a memorable adventure.

Charting the Flow. An included flowchart shows how the adventure can progress, very effectively diagramming different events to show how player choices affect the timing and nature of encounters. "Speaker in Dreams" is civided into two roughly equal parts and has a revelation partway through the adventure that has been known to catch some players off guard. Players who greatly prefer combat over solving mysteries may find the adventure somewhat dissatisfying.

Experienced DM Needed, Apply Within. "The Speaker in Dreams" can be a polarizing adventure amongst players, historically garnering both raves and harsh critiques depending on how comfortable the DM is with the adventure's theme and structure. This is an adventure that's difficult to run unprepared; the structure requires the DM to understand how different encounters and actions affect one another, and clever and unexpected player actions may require the DM to slide around on the flowchart and tailor encounters appropriately. The use of the contained flowchart eases this challenge somewhat, but it's recommended that the DM be familiar with the adventure or risk spending time flipping through the module as the players' actions affect the plot.

Rats! One caution is that this adventure pits 5th-level characters against foes that they may have trouble damaging. The author cleverly lays out alternatives for DMs who are concerned about this, including swapping out the primary monsters entirely in exchange for a less deadly alternative, but it's not impossible for the entire party to be infected by lycanthropy. Plan accordingly.  

Sandbox. The town of Brindinford is well detailed, with plenty going on that doesn't directly affect the adventure. The town can be turned into a PC base of operations or a regular location in the campaign without much additional work on the part of the DM.

About the Creators. James Wyatt is a novelist and former minister who has worked at Wizards of the Coast since the year 2000, long after he began writing for Dungeon Magazine. He has won Origins Awards for City of the Spider Queen (2003) and the Eberron Campaign setting (2005), as well as an ENnie for Oriental Adventures (2002).

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
