Description:

Behold the Many Faces of Mankind's Darkest Enemy

Twin puncture wounds mark the kiss of the nosferatu. Blood trickles with the slow crawl of despair. A shadow lingers, black against black. Chill mist clings damply to every surface, and the echo of an anguished shriek still hangs in the air.

Children of the Night: Vampires introduces 13 unique and terrifying villains of horrific proportion. Each one challenges vampire hunters to rethink common perceptions regarding these foes - for these are no ordinary undead. Every creature presented in this book is a unique individual with its own history, personality, and powers.

These lords of the night whom adventurers may meet include the following:

  • Jander Sunstar, one of the oldest vampires in the Land of Mists

  • Myxitzajal, a seagoing monster with a taste for fishermen

  • Lady Adeline, an elf vampire who seeks out the light rather than hiding from it

  • Lyssa von Zarovich, who covets the power of her great uncle Strahd

...and many more!

These Are the Children of the Night

Children of the Night: Vampires is the first book in a new series that brings to (un)life the creature types treated in the bestselling Van Richten's Guides. Each volume offers biographies of distinct and monstrous villains easily added to any game; short adventures featuring such nemeses, which can stand alone or be strung together to form a mini-campaign; unique ways to fight each foe; and adventure hooks for using the creatures as recurring villains.

For all character levels.

Product History

Children of the Night: Vampires (1996) was the first book in the Ravenloft Children of the Night series. It features thirteen unique vampires and provides a short adventure and a detailed description of each.

Vampiric Variance. Tired of Dracula wanna-bes? This book provides a number of flavorful alternatives. There's a sea vampire who captains a warship of zombies and who can turn into a giant squid. There's a vampiric ixitxachitl (say it with me five times fast), a half-vampire who struggles on the edge of death, a sadistic clown who needs to terrify his victims in order to feed, a vampiric druid, and more. While there's a range of usefulness and effectiveness for each vampire, the breadth of options and willingness to break away from the traditional vampiric stereotype is refreshing.

Focused and Useful. This is a book of well-designed, creative vampires for use as NPCs or monsters. Adventures are short and are designed to be slotted in as side adventures in an ongoing campaign. This type of product fills a particular need in a world of gaming supplements that are more oftne than not mega-modules. Small, concise encounters do a fine job of filling extra play sessions, and there's always a place for well-designed villainous NPCs to use as repeating foes.

Old Friends Seen Again. One of the best inclusions in the book is the stats and description of Jander Sunstar, a previously unstatted elven nosferatu who was a popular character in the Ravenloft novel Vampire of the Mists. His background manages to summarize the novel while keeping spoilers to a minimum.

About the Creators. This book is designed by Paul Culotta and developed by Steve Miller, with additional editing and design by Johnathan Ariadne Caspian and Carol L. Johnson.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
